How Telescopes Work TipsThe largest refracting telescope in the United Kingdom is located at the Royal Greenwich Observatory. Built in 1893 their refracting telescope was designed by Howard Grubb whose family founded the Grubb Telescope Company. This is the same principle that a magnifying glass uses, as it too takes a small image on the paper and spreads it out over the retina of your eye so that it looks big. Then there is the eyepiece lens which takes the bright light from the focus of the objective lens or primary mirror and spreads it out or magnifies it in order to take up a large portion of the retina.
